Setting

In a not so distant future, aliens are showing up constantly at the cities, more specifically at the schools. To protect themselves, the schools create the 'Alien Fighters' squad, a small group of students who fight the aliens - should they appear. To make it a fair battle, each Alien Fighter receives a symbiotic alien, which 'merges' into their heads almost as a helmet. Yuri, Kumi and Kasumi are 'this year's' fighters, and will have to learn how to deal with their symbiotes, fight the aliens and most importantly, their fears.

Pacing

An important notice. Alien Nine is a huge and elaborated allegory/metaphor of Japanese society and what small children go thru as they grow up. Every aspect of the title have, in fact, a symbology related to a real aspect of society.

The title focuses - naturally - on each character and their personal drama. We have Yuri, incapable of controlling her emotions, and clearly in despair when confronted by the obstacles imposed by the situation; Kumi, a serene and 'grown up' girl whom everybody praised and tend to when in need, but that in fact, deep inside, is lonely and depressed; And Natsumi, a 'perfect' and 'brilliant' girl, with lots of energy and spirit, but that in fact hides her feelings and is incapable of expressing herself.

As the title progress, mysteries emerge, and a real and deep plot shows up in a subtle - almost invisible way.

Conclusion

Alien Nine is, without measuring works, genial. A extremely dense psychological title, filled with symbolism (everything is symbolic, even the aliens) everywhere. Certainly it's not your average anime which will please legions of fans, and actually, most people will get irritated by Yuri's constant crying, and even more, the abrupt sudden and chocking ending (hint: watch the last episode past the credits)

Personally, when I watched this title for the first time, I was kind of ... traumatized. However, after thinking about the title and reading some nice essays about it on the internet, I finally understood the really scope of this anime. It's not about 3 cute little girls fighting weird looking aliens, but actually a deep social critic, with an extreme cold realistic and psychologic view of society. Do not watch if you don't like to think, stop a second to wonder the 'what if's' of life, and have some miserable truths thrown in your face.

Don't miss the excellent essay about Alien Nine (see 'Essays' on the menu) AFTER you watch it (even if you are confused and traumatized ><)
