Setting

On a near future, a rebel scientist - Zorndyke - starts a war against mankind, increasing the sea level and trying to change earth's electromagnetic poles, while producing new aquatic species (some with intelligence) on the planet. Before he manages to destroy the world as we know it, the 'Blue fleet' is assembled to try and stop him.

Pacing

With a huge effect gallery, Blue Submarine is a post-apocalyptic adventure with action and submarine battles, using a plot vaguely related to prejudices and tolerance. A nice title, especially for those eager for battles - this time under the sea.

With only 2:30h, there is not much character development, but yet there are some enough for the viewer to identify with some main characters and their dramas, or at least, to try and understand why they behave like they do.

Blue Submarine in the end is a visual festival, merging CG and cell art. If you keep in mind it's a late 90's work, it actually excels on doing so. Although using a somewhat common and overused post-apocalyptic plot, the development is pleasant and with nice characters never over-used. There is certain preoccupation to show us both sides of the battle, which obviously comes as a nice extra.

Conclusion

Obviously the fact that the ?bad guys? are little ugly monsters doesn?t help too much to give some credit for this work, though this - with some tolerance - can be forgiven.

Avoiding some clichés, Blue Submarine might annoy some people with its ... different ... ending, but that's exactly why it manages to escape the common ground most post-apocalyptic titles get. It shows as a nice and grounded plot, where even the romantic subplot follows a realistic logic (in opposition to a popular logic to please the viewers)
