In a distant future, mankind is confined to Mars and the Moon, having Earth been totally polluted and thus incapable of sustaining life. At Mars, it have been years since a woman got pregnant. To replace children, small servant robots called 'dolls' are built. Layla is a mercenary that journeys thru Mars from town to town, and eventually meets Nei, a strange doll which she earns in a battle, and Speedy, a 'Doll breeder' (some kind of doll technician).
Pacing
Avenger is a slow paced title with very few surprises except the final seconds. The main focus is a light character development between Layla and Nei, but the first is a deep pit of indifference, and the other is just a robot (which most of the times is more lively than Layla). Speedy is practically secondary.
The main plot doesn?t get too deep and although we have a glimpse of Mars founders (humans that somehow never age, and among them there are the powerful Volk and the beauty Vesta), and even they are very poorly developed except what is needed to connect them to the plot.
Conclusion
Avenger doesn?t offers too much entertainment, though it's quite mysterious and have a pretty visual, nothing really surfaces and suffices at the plot nor character department. The ending, forced and predictable, tries to tie up the loose knots of the plot, but actually only seam a forced ending just to excuse the weirdness of the plot.
With a nice sound track by Ali Project and a nice graphic, Avenger doesn?t leave too much the conventional fiction/mystery formula. This is a typical 'watch without waiting too much and like it, or have expectations and hate it'.
